How One Finds The North Star
This is a story I made for a creative writing class I'm taking. I know this isn't exactly current events but art can either reflect or shape the world and I hope mine is the latter. Of course I realize that I'm just a student, I have not the power and recognition of established authors. This is just a little gift to whoever wants to read.
How One Finds The North Star part 1
Jerald was bored that day. For three days now nothing out of the ordinary had happened, his assignment, a boy of about age 16 did his usual duties and played video games when he thought no one was looking. The temperature outside was a blistering 125, so hot even climate control was starting to malfunction. Jerald was tempted to go into autopilot, let the computer take care of things. As he reached for the pad on his forearm, Boss came in over his thoughts.
"Jerry, any news?"
"It's Jerald, Boss."
"Shut up. I'll get someone to kill your weird jacket --- too." Boss was referring to his retro 2150 jacket.
"Yeah okay. No news, I honestly think that this lady backed off."
"Well you know what to do Jerry."
Boss was a mafia man, he had lived probably longer than anyone else in the city. He was one of the first to get life extension surgery, while it was still illegal. He was definitely upwards of 175, his birth records were falsified. No one he knew had ever seen him. Boss stayed under ground to avoid the detrimental effects of the heat on his system, some said he was all machine but his brain. That would certainly explain the energy and colorful language Jerald had heard. Only a computer can do that for a brain of 175 years. He gazed outside the tinted windows, he could see the Chugach mountains. According to rumors that's where Boss hid himself. The mountains were cool on the inside and it kept him close to the wireless towers. Jerald reached for the button again and hoped that Boss wouldn't interrupt, when the assignment walked up to him.
"Lemme guess, boss in your head?"
Jerald was startled, he thought the kid was supposed to just ignore him, cybernetic businessmen sat in Fisher's Robotics Lab all the time for the climate control. Or had he given himself away? Jerald's thoughts were interrupted yet again only this time by Lucy, the CPU. You shouldn't be wearing that unorthodox jacket. Chapter 78.098 says that it is best to disguise oneself as whatever the target has summoned you as...
"I bet it's a pain, huh? Like you head doesn't even belong to you."
"I'm busy kid..." And if you enter the calm expression code 5623, target will assume that you are a benign object in the field of his/her...
"I can fix that for a small fee, you know, give you back your head."
Jerald thought about this, it was actually a beautiful suggestion, but Boss had resources. He'd find out. But if he could shut up computer support that'd be great. Generally it is unwise to choose to continue speaking to target and it is better to leave in as nonchalant form if possible and to contact Boss immediately. Just press 9970 to listen to what I told you again or...."Can you keep this fix real secret from the sending and receiving end?"
The kid frowned in thought. "How secret are we talking here?"
Chapter 23.717 states that prolonged communication with the target is unwise for this type of mission because the target may remember you, and therefore notice you in the future when... "I need to be able to shut out my CPU control and my bosses voice without him finding out."
"Do you use audio or Thoughtwave?
Press 1098 to contact mission... "It's Thoughtwave"
"How often to you have to reply?"
This information has been brought to you by Northern Cybernetics..."Just when my boss talks. The CPU streams some unwanted data back to the big guy too."
"I can do it but it's going to cost you, this is going to take a special program I don't normally use and DoubleU."
"Is that an acronym? Connecting you to success©!
"No it's program for managing and creating information to fool bosses and overprotective women."
"Women?"
"Yeah, that's where a lot of my business comes from. Some women have been using these systems to keep constant tabs on their husbands."
"Will this work on a real business? I'm being bothered by people with a little bit more at their disposal than a housewife."
"Not a problem I stole my version from the P.I.S. (Pangaia Information Service)."
